Biological science studies the structures, functions and development of the organisms, and the relationship between the organisms and their surrounding environments. In the 21st century, with the rapid development of science and technology, biological science systematically studies the basic theories in life sciences at molecular, cellular, individual and colonial levels. As a frontier field of natural science, biological science is becoming one of the fastest growing and most widely applied disciplines. The research has brought far-reaching impact on human health and has reformed the whole world. The development of biological science also promotes the growth of our national economy and social productivity.

The major of biological science in the School of Life Sciences at Lanzhou University is a comprehensive specialty which integrates the subjects of zoology (1946), botany (1946), plant physiology (1980), cell biology (1980) and biochemistry (1980). With the support of "211" and "985" projects, the School of Life sciences has built an outstanding teaching team by relying on the platform of teaching practice such as the National Key Laboratory, the Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education, the National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center and the Biological Practice Base.

Students majoring in biological science will study basic theories of biology, mathematics, physics, chemistry and social sciences.
